Steam and Diesel locos leaving Paddington - A painting by Alan Ward
"Pretender to the throne"
by Alan Ward

King George V (the bell) departs Paddington alongside an IC125 to start the GWR 150th Anniversary celebrations.

Alan Ward- Railway artist

The romance of the age of steam is all but lost with the ordinariness and standardisation of the current stock of engine power. Alan recaptures with oil on canvas the thrilling sights of powerful locomotives performing near to their design limits and the sense of excitement and expectation which meant that every head turned when the train thundered past. You can almost hear and smell the atmosphere of the mainline junctions so vivid is the imagery.

Alan has a collection of his work which takes in scenes from Exmoor, Bristol, Waterways etc. in addition to his well known atmospheric railway paintings.

Miniature pendant

Hilliard Society - Miniatures

The amazing skills and artistic talent can only be admired in this exhibition of miniatures created by members of the Hillaird Society of Miniaturists. Modern miniaturists are not confined to portraiture alone and miniatures on several different media will be on display. Artwork on such a small scale whether on canvas, or in wood, creates its own problems with scale and perspective and the exhibition highlights the wonderful skills and the wide variety of miniatures created by members of the Society which is based here in the West Country.

Unlocking the creative spirit is the key to success in self-expression and the teachers' work from drawing and painting to digital imagery provides many fine examples of the liberated spirit.
