2005 Festival News Release 24 Dec 2004

Highlights of the main programme include the thrilling London Community Gospel Choir, famous for their up-tempo Gospel sounds and rich harmonies. Ex Likely Lad and collector of period boats, Rodney Bewes, performs his charming and hilarious version of Jerome K Jerome's 'Three Men in a Boat' complete with Rodney's Edwardian skiff. Joan Bakewell, the radio and TV personality and intellectual opens the Festival with a fascinating account of her life and times inside and outside of television. Music events vary from Hat Stand Opera giving their own informal, interactive and highly entertaining Golden Moments from the Opera, and Duo del fuego, the breathtaking combination of dazzling classical violinist Roger Huckle and guitarist Hayley Savage. Nationally recognised local jazz musician Dave Betts and his quintet perform Latin jazz, and local bands, musicians and dancers will give a concert organised by ngm showcasing the winners of the previous weeks 'Battle of the Bands'. Independent Ballet Wales who impressed so much at last year's Festival will re-visit Thornbury with their interpretation of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and the space advisor to the Royal Astronomical Society Peter R Bond will give us a highly visual and interactive ' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe'.

Fringe, Community and School Events

For the first time in Thornbury, a 'Poetry Slam' will be held in a local public house highlighting local performance poets in addition to artists organised by The Bristol based organisation Poetry Can. Local artists headed by Phil Domaille will perform a comedy review at the Chantry. Festival regular poet and performer from Newport, Paul Henry, will perform his music and poetry. Concerts will be held in local Residential and Nursing Homes. A guided walk of the arboretum at Tortworth Court will include a delicious cream tea.

Events for secondary schools

Include Dr Dave Reay, a leading scientist from the GeoScience Unit of Edinburgh University, discussing the effects of greenhouse gases, and the poet Paul Henry will take creative writing workshops. Events for primary children include Gamelan workshops by Andy Warn of The Crotchet Factory allowing children to play this extraordinary percussion instrument, and participative music and dance events taken by Inder Pym.

CALLING ALL POETS!

In a first for Thornbury, the 2005 Arts Festival will include a Poetry Slam. This is the opportunity for local poets to perform their work in an interactive and friendly atmosphere. The workshop-style event will be led by Bristol poets Glenn Carmichael and Claire Williamson, both experienced at running such events in schools and other community venues, and may involve other poets known to Claire and Glenn.
All ages are welcome. Just choose three of the favourite poems you have written yourself. Or, use the next month or so to write three poems that you would like to perform. Apart from that, Claire says you need 'bravery and a burning in your heart' to perform your poetry to like minded enthusiasts.
